SUKHOI SU-26 M2

The Sukhoi Su-26 was first announced in 1984 in its prototype form and,
after a series of developments, it came out in the first formal production
variant as the Su-26M in 1989. Since then, it has been the most successful
single aircraft in the history of aerobatics, winning a rang of individual,
team, European and world aerobatic championships. Indeed, the type is still
used by the Russian aerobatic team, who claim that its slightly greater
stability in manoeuvres make it more suitable for the strict 'Aresti' in
competitions. Certainly, it has proved itself an immensely rugged aircraft,
capable of very hard use with relatively low maintenance costs.

The Su-26M led to two later variants, the -26M2, which had an additional
40 litres of fuselage (making 105 litres) and the -26MX which carries
105 litres in each wing making a total of 275 litres, with a range of up
to 1,400Km! Inevitably, these long-range tanks carry a weight penalty,
particularly on the MX but either aircraft is still incredibly competitive,
whether for competition aerobatics, airshows or even pure 'fun' flying.
